great job Amanda! This brings up a bunch of great opportunities to help us grow our businesses. Something that I just did for the first time was go to a Meetup.com meetup and it was awesome! It was a nice, more laid back business atmosphere with some wine, beer and appetizers. Being a youngin' (22 today) I was the youngest one there but I found that the group I attended was a great group. I met about 10 people, hung out with them for 2 1/2 hours and learned about each one of their businesses/goals and how I can help them achieve them.

For number 3, I recommend checking out meetup.com for business/entrepreneur groups in the area. I personally will be doing business with one of the girls I met, and might be holding a seminar with another one of the men who I met there. The other members of the group shared their cards with me and I'm on the look out to help them out. Business is personal and by building these relationships through networking events, we end up helping each other grow businesses. Referrals are cheap marketing!!!

great post!

Interesting article, but a few notes.

Under #5, be sure to speak with an accountant about this. Not all in-kind donations are tax deductible, and service providers often can't take this as a write-off. It also has a secondary trouble of being hard to then transition this into a paid gig as you've now gotten the potential client used to it being a free service; be prepared for them to nickle and dime you when it turns into paid.

A while ago I wrote an article entitled "Making use of popular social media tools to reach new business" which showcases some free/inexpensive methods for marketing your business that might be useful: http://blog.confluentforms.com/2009/01/can-i-tw...

You can also try out the RFP Database at http://www.rfpdb.com; the site includes a way for you to gain access to project leads for free if you assist by contributing content.
Great tips Amanda. I like the 1st tip about having good marketing materials. Websites are so critical and many people miss the mark with them.. .All of the other steps won't add up to what they should if someone is turned off when they go to your site. You need to be set-up to convert people somewhere and really draw all of those connections in.
