One of the most useful tips I ever was able to come up with from something I read by Brian Tracy was the idea of elevating yourself into leadership positions in an organization that is staffed by volunteers. By taking an active leadership role you put yourself at the forefront of an organization and your network grows extremely fast.

If you are at a networking party you aren't just going to try to pitch things right off the bat. It's about getting to know people, making them like and trust you and then looking into if your services are going to be part of the relationship.

Many people forget that online networking is an extension of yourself! If you wouldn't do it offline, why would you do it online?

The upward link! Yes. Amazing how such a simple step of sending a person you want to know, work with and learn from can make if you use the right language. Like the dating tip, don't ask for anything other than time to meet in that email and give valuable, MEANINGFUL compliments that showed you listened and retained what your future mentor/connection talked about (without sounding like a total kiss-ass.)
