I do think your advice is relevant during early days, but at day 0, when you start your company, I believe that you need to begin with a game-changing vision.

I received a copy of the book and read as much as possible on my flight from T F Green to Lugardia. Very interesting Cult(ure) you've created. In a great way of course. It was a wealth of inspiration for my future pursuits.

Thanks,
-Andrew Hill

Its true that the little things are what matter most in the early days. But I think that big vision is very important.

It also depends on your goals though. Not everyone wants to dominate something like "transportation" they rather stay in their little niche. But I know even with under30ceo we continue to narrow our niche down and focus on the little things but the larger vision of entrepreneurship as a whole is always there and we make sure our smaller moves are in line with that big goal.

But I do agree that focus and the little things like cash for food tomorrow are much greater concerns as a start-up rather then the global domination view.

Tony's advice is great in theory, but does it apply to start-ups? A big point in this interview is that Zappos is doing $1 Billion in sales a year. Zappos is not a start-up but once was. Tony has the room to talk about all of these great, positive ideas, but I don't believe entrepreneurs should necessarily take his advice to heart.

Try to think about it in these terms: Zappos - $1 Billion in sales ... Start-up founded by college-age entrepreneur - $0. Now if you're making $0, what's more important, getting cashflow or "thinking bigger" like in his railroad / transportation example? Having a long-term vision and outlook is great but in the short-term when you're "gasping" for revenue, it's better to focus on the basics: who are my customers, what do my customers want, how can I make something they want and will find valuable? I know from personal experience that it is far easy to get bogged down this sort of "high minded" thinking, and overlook the essentials like, what is our first product or service going to be, how do we make money, and grow the company?

My advice is to be careful with taking Tony's advice too much to heart. Idealism and positive thinking is great (and something I love to embrace) but savvy entrepreneurs also need to be realists.

Do you have a different take?...

I think people are willing to pay a very large premium for customer service. Much of customer service is about making things easier for the customer like Tony's return policy. As people's lives get more hectic and busier in this faced paced world I think the idea of something that is simple and makes your life easy/relaxing is of huge value.

I always believe there are room for "me-toos". If your company brings your own vision, style, and feel to customer service I think it can be just as successful.

I love the idea of thinking bigger. That is a very powerful statement realizing what overall industry your in rather then just seeing what you are doing specifically. I think that helps a company be more flexible. As Tony said railroads have disappeared yet transportation will never go away. Online show sales may change or fade but customer service won't. It's a really interesting take on things and even though its important to focus on your niche at least understand that bigger picture
