The Vinny Chase Syndrome: Dreaming Big

by / ⠀Personal Branding Startup Advice / September 28, 2011

When some of us out there dream, we tend to dream big.  Especially me.  Fancy cars, million dollar homes, and women surrounding me everywhere I go.  This is the life I want to live and remind myself of every day.  I call it “Vinny Chase syndrome,” star of the hit show Entourage who lives this life on a daily basis.

Now don’t get me wrong, dreaming big is a good thing.  Only those of us that dream big reap the benefits that few others ever achieve.

However, as great as it is to be dedicated to growing your business, there is such a thing as working too much and too hard.  I for one am guilty of this CEO sin.

Don’t blame me though.  Blame Vinny Chase Syndrome!  I convince myself on a consistent basis that if I just work one more hour, if I just complete one more task, or if I just figure out one more problem, I will be one step closer to that ultimate lifestyle.

Well the truth is, I have learned the hard way the sometimes less is more, especially when you are running a company.

When it comes down to it, your mental health is more important than anything.  Working non-stop takes us to a point where we stop being productive, and start leaning much more towards counter-productivity.

First

For starters, without a sharp mind we will wind up making poor business decisions.  One cannot think clearly when he or she has been working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Sometimes you need to just step away and take a breather.  You’d be amazed at how refreshed you will feel when you come back to your business after something as small as a two-day break.  And perhaps most importantly, you will find yourself newly inspired and freshly motivated.

Second

Secondly, working more doesn’t mean you are accomplishing more.  Most of us are in the mindset that if we have not worked 8 to 12 hour days, then we are not working our hardest.

This is due to the fact that society has programmed us to feel this way all our lives since every job we have ever worked has probably been in this range.  Wipe this thought process out of your mind because 8 hour days are far from necessary for all of us.

The truth is, some days you will get everything that needs to be done in four hours.  Other days it might take six.  But you don’t have to fill up eight hours just for the sake of filling up eight hours!

I can’t tell you how many times I have obsessively checked emails for hours on end or sat in front of my computer doing other mindless tasks until the “work day” was over.  Over the years this has wasted an enormous amount of my time.

Place a priority on your most important tasks for the day, get them done, and take a breather.  This extra rest will keep you going strong for when you need it.

Finally

Learn to delegate responsibility to others.  Not all tasks require your attention.  Don’t be afraid to have a little help once in a while.  It is hard to let go of the reigns at first, but when you do, you will feel yourself feeling better each and every day.  You might even find yourself having time for your hobbies again!

When all is said and done, we all want to live the dream lifestyle.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to be Vinny Chase, and we all have the potential to get there.   But these things take time.  We can’t force them into happening by working hour after hour when there is nothing left to be done.  And we can rush the process by never taking a day off.

At the end of the day we can only do so much.  But if our business is filling a void in society, and we are doing what we can at a realistic level to make it grow, we will reach growth over time.  In the mean time, relax and enjoy life!
