“Entrepreneurship is America’s Secret Sauce” – Steve Case

| October 14, 2011 | 4 Comments

AOL co-founder and head of the Case Foundation, Steve Case, talked on MSNBC about how America needs to get back to entrepreneurship to survive and compete. Entrepreneurship is the reason America has leading companies that employee 10s of thousands of people and we need support and encourage these companies.

An interesting point is how most high growth companies are in the service/manufacturing sectors. To often we see young business owners think that success is an article on Techcrunch talking about their million dollars in funding trying to be the next Google or Facebook. In reality there is a lot more opportunity in what many might call “boring” industries where your company may not get tons of press or be tweeted about everyday. Silicon Valley is a small blip on the screen of the overall picture of high growth companies even though they are the ones that make the news every night.

Steve Case is also on the presidents job council and is the chair for Startupamericapartnership.org.

    Some questions:

    1. How do we get young entrepreneurs interested in those “boring” industries?
    2. Tech has very low barriers to entry. Do young entrepreneurs simply not have the capital to start in other spaces?

This is why America is falling behind:

Each day 100m school children are forced to haggle a fare with an adult male stranger on an unmetered motorcycle taxi.

    Problem solved.

We build the world’s only taxi meter for the largest taxi force on earth (20m+ motorcycle taxis vs. 3m taxicabs, worldwide). We’ve been featured by CNN, Newsweek, Wired, Fast Company, etc., moreover, our product will be mandated, i.e., the customer must buy the product: Venture Capital firms should be knocking down our doors as opposed to lavishing money on companies that aspire to crank out a single “Checkers” app for the iPad.

Alas, saving, protecting and improving the lives of millions of people is perhaps “boring” to many VCs. This is why America is falling behind.

    Prove me wrong.
