No Jobs, Lots of Loans, Grim Future for Gen Y

| July 28, 2010 | 8 Comments

Jordan HuesemanMSNBC.com reported today on how troubled Gen Y is and how they are facing a crisis because they can not find jobs right out of school. Sure ,many in Gen Y are facing tough times and are having trouble finding those jobs that in many cases are not there. However, this does not need to mean “grim future” or “lost generation” as one of our past articles pointed out.  There is opportunity everywhere so why don’t more people see the lack of a career out of college as a chance to explore the world? The chance to explore and see what you can do on your own?

The article talks about how many people have these staggering loans out of college that they can’t pay off right now. Again, that is true but they still fail to see how taking that job at Starbucks or Panera Bread to makes ends meet is not all you are capable of until the job market opens up again.

But this is the norm. Most people see an economy in recession and immediately are hit with fear rather then seeing opportunity. For some, times like this are a serious problem, but for many they just are not taking action and diving head first into something that could create more opportunities, like starting a business on the side. Instead they don’t know what to do and think that waiting for the next Starbucks to open up is all they have.

What are your thoughts? How do more people take action and create things in their lives to avoid this “grim future”?

Very good article, I fully agree with you that people limit their abilities due to their current environment. We all have greatness in us its a matter if WE birth it and cultivate into true greatness. I love the adage: if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. The question one really needs to ask is what do i truely truely love the most and what needs in that market are not being met? Once identified develop a plan and then implement. Its really easier said than done and takes alot of deep self reflection to make that dream a reality. People forget after storms come rainbows! We are currently in a storm that we as general americans didnt make, but YOU have the power to make your own rainbow. I hope all find that pot of gold at the end.

So true. People have to find something they love. But most people don't sit down and think about what that even is. It takes the effort and the understanding that you can go after what you want!

I totally agree that recent graduates should take advantage of the opportunity they fail to see before their eyes. Everybody, including myself, straight out of college went immediately to a full-time job. We didn't have the time to explore the world, or even the areas around us! Now our schedules are busy and hectic and we find every excuse as to why there's no time to explore or take extended vacations.

Yes, student loans may be an obstacle, but an extended vacation trip doesn't have to be somewhere crazy like backpacking through Europe. It could be as simple as gathering a few friends together and taking a road trip for a while. Find people who have family in different states and stay at their homes. Be strategic!

We only live once…we must explore! By exploring, we will discover ourselves and that is priceless.

Looking forward to the next article!

Love it Alan glad to see you agree! It does not have to be something expansive or crazy at all. Usually it is very small steps that lead to big things happening. But people just have to take those steps in the first place!
