Retirees must meet requirements to keep Social Security

by / ⠀News / March 6, 2025

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed that retirees must meet specific requirements to keep their payments. Millions of retirees in the United States could see their Social Security payments suspended if they fail to comply. For many Americans, Social Security is a lifeline.

It covers essential expenses such as housing, food, and healthcare. However, administrative errors, failure to report changes, or neglecting SSA guidelines could have serious financial consequences. One of the most common mistakes retirees make is not updating their address, marital status, or employment status with the SSA.

If the agency does not have accurate information, payments may be delayed, sent to the wrong address, or even suspended. Retirees who continue working must report any changes in income. The SSA enforces strict earnings limits for those receiving benefits before retirement.

Exceeding these limits could result in benefit reductions or temporary suspensions. The SSA conducts periodic residency verification checks to ensure beneficiaries live at their registered address.

Meeting Social Security requirements

If discrepancies arise, payments may be suspended until the issue is resolved. This is particularly relevant for retirees who live abroad or frequently change residences. To ensure uninterrupted benefits, retirees should keep personal information updated through their My Social Security account.

They should report income changes to avoid overpayment issues or benefit reductions. Residence details should be kept current with the SSA to meet eligibility requirements. Retirees should stay vigilant against scams, as the SSA warns of fraudulent calls claiming that benefits have been suspended.

Those concerned about their payments or SSA compliance should contact the agency directly through its official helpline or visit a local SSA office for assistance. AARP has issued a statement requesting President Trump’s Social Security Administration assurances. The organization is hearing from thousands of older Americans confused and concerned about their Social Security payments, the status of Social Security field offices, and long phone wait times to get their questions answered.

AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond stated, “AARP is requesting assurances that people can expect to have their questions answered and services delivered in a timely, efficient manner.”

The organization has called on the SSA to improve customer service for decades. “It is a matter of basic respect that people should be able to receive timely and correct answers to questions that can impact their financial future,” LeaMond said. AARP wants to work with Congressional leaders and the Administration to ensure that Americans get answers, transparency, and assurances that payments will continue to be made on time, customer service needs will be met, and people’s data will remain secure.
