The Springfield Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in Massachusetts has concluded its grant distributions for fiscal 2024 by allocating funds to eight local female-owned businesses. A total of $17,500 was distributed among these enterprises, indicating EDC’s support for local entrepreneurship and economic growth.
The grants will provide essential support for these businesses and help stimulate the growth and innovation Massachusetts’ local economy needs. The initiative also highlights EDC’s commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs, aiming to reduce socio-economic disparities and cultivate a diverse, inclusive business environment.
Andrew Melendez, the Founder and Director of the EDC, emphasized that the organization aims to not just provide financial support, but also essential training and resources to beneficiary enterprises. The EDC’s programs are designed to be innovative and adaptive to the varying needs of their beneficiaries and focus on fostering successful enterprises which can contribute significantly to their local communities and the overall economy.
At the distribution event, grant recipients shared how they intend to utilize the funds and expressed gratitude for the financial assistance. Senator Adam Gomez also attended this event, rallying further support for the program.
For fiscal 2025, the EDC pledged to sustain its commitment to economic inclusivity and growth by increasing grant funds to a total of $200,000.

These included a story-slam to celebrate Juneteenth, the establishment of cooling centers to mitigate the summer heat, a concert by rapper Dave East, and a tree planting initiative at Mulberry Park. The EDC also launched their app for both Android and iOS users, aiming to enhance communication and engagement with the public.
