The House task force investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has sent letters requesting documents from top officials in the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Secret Service. The bipartisan task force, chaired by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and co-chaired by Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), has set an Aug. 16 deadline for initial briefings from the agencies involved.
The task force was formed following the July 13, 2024, incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman positioned himself on a rooftop near a rally perimeter and opened fire, killing one attendee and injuring Trump in the ear.
The House unanimously voted 416-0 to create the task force, granting it substantial authority, including subpoena power, to consolidate various ongoing investigations.
Task force requests key investigation documents
Kelly and Crow emphasized the urgency of the probe in their request, stating, “We, as the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J.
Trump (Task Force), write to request documents and information related to the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.”
The task force aims to maintain a non-partisan approach to ensure the investigation’s integrity and efficacy. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) led the assembly of the panel, which has received numerous requests from GOP lawmakers eager to be involved.
Kelly and Crow are considering a visit to the site of the shooting in Pennsylvania to further their understanding of the circumstances. Crow, a former Army Ranger, noted the significance of such a visit, especially for Kelly, who represents the surrounding district and was present at the rally. The task force plans to produce a comprehensive report by the end of the year, detailing their findings and recommendations to prevent future incidents.
They have requested that all documents and information related to the investigation be sent directly to the task force, including any materials already provided to other committees.
