Over 200 protesters arrested at NYSE

Police arrested over 200 protesters from the pro-Palestinian group Jewish Voice for Peace on Monday morning.

The demonstrators staged a sit-in outside the New York Stock Exchange, chaining themselves to the doors ahead of the opening bell. The protesters aimed to “shut down business as usual” and urge the U.S. government to stop sending weapons to Israel.

They carried signs reading “Fund FEMA not genocide,” “Gaza bombed Wall Street booms,” and “Jews say divest from Israel.”

“The reason we were here, specifically as Jews, is because the Biden administration and the Israeli government often say this genocide they are committing is in the name of Jewish safety, and we reject that with every fiber of our being,” stated Beth Miller, the director of Jewish Voice for Peace. The group, which describes itself as the “largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world,” has been vocal in its opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel.

They advocate for a reevaluation of American foreign policy in the region.

The police worked for approximately three hours to complete the arrests, with 206 individuals taken into custody in total. The protesters’ bold action included draping a red shirt on the iconic Fearless Girl statue, symbolizing their call for change.

Witnesses at the scene noted that the police were meticulous, working steadily to clear the protest while maintaining order. The arrests, which started around 9:30 a.m., continued until 12:30 p.m.

This large-scale demonstration reflects a growing discontent among specific Jewish communities regarding U.S. support for Israel. It highlights the complex dynamics of identity and international politics within these groups.
