The U.S. government has confirmed that on November 1, 2024, Social Security recipients will receive a double retirement payout. Those eligible must have started receiving benefits after May 1997 and have a birthday between the 21st and 31st of any month. In addition to the regular retirement payment, eligible recipients will also receive an extra Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment on November 1st.
The SSI benefit is available to U.S. citizens who are 65 years or older, or individuals with disabilities, who meet low-income and asset criteria. SSI recipients will receive a check for $943 on November 1, along with their regular Social Security payment. This double payment in November is due to a quirk in the system that results in a second monthly payment on rare occasions.
Typically, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out one payment each week, delivering Social Security checks on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. It pays SSI on the first of the month unless it falls on a weekend or holiday. Because December 1 falls on a Sunday, SSI recipients will receive two payments in November.
The first check will arrive on Friday, November 1, while the second check will come on Friday, November 29.
social security November payouts doubled
Roughly 7.4 million Americans collect SSI benefits.
The back-to-back deposits do not mean retirees are receiving extra money – it’s just an early payment for the following month. Social Security recipients recently learned the size of the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) they will receive for 2025, which will be 2.5%, the smallest since 2021. That means Social Security retirement benefits will, on average, increase by roughly $50 per month starting in January, according to the SSA.
Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley said, “Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, helping tens of millions of people keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool.”
The SSA releases its yearly distribution schedules well in advance. Recipients of typical Social Security retirement benefits will receive their payments on the following dates in November:
– Wednesday, November 13: Birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month. – Wednesday, November 20: Birth dates between the 11th and the 20th of the month.
– Wednesday, November 27: Birth dates between the 21st and the 31st of the month. Last week, the SSA announced the rollout of a new, streamlined process for Americans to apply for SSI benefits later this year. The new online system, called iClaim, features simpler, plain-language questions meant to expedite the process for both applicants and claims processors.
Initially, not all applicants will have immediate access to the new system, with the first phase launching in December and the second phase, which will expand access to all applicants, slated for 2025.
