Barking and Dagenham promote financial wellbeing

The Barking and Dagenham Council is encouraging residents to ‘do one thing’ to improve their financial wellbeing as part of the Money and Pensions Service’s Talk Money Week. The week, held from November 4 to 8, aims to reduce the stigma surrounding financial discussions by promoting open conversations among families, friends, colleagues, and communities. The council is asking everyone to participate by taking a significant financial step, such as creating a detailed budget or reviewing their pension.

They also suggest doing something simpler, like discussing pocket money with a child or using the benefits calculator tool on the BD Money website. The council hopes that by talking about their actions and reasons, individuals can inspire others to take similar steps. Talking openly about finances can have a substantial impact on health and relationships.

It can lead to better and more informed financial decisions. Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, emphasizes the importance.

Talking openly boosts financial health

“Thousands of households with low incomes are feeling the impact of high living costs, which also affects mental health and wellbeing. That’s why it’s vital to get talking about money—just one conversation could make all the difference and help you get the support you need.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the borough’s Community Hubs and the Homes and Money Hub. There, they can have friendly chats and access various support services to help them stay on track.

Oliver Morley, Chief Executive at the Money and Pensions Service, adds: “Discussing money with friends, family, and children—or experts if necessary—can build financial confidence and resilience. As part of our annual Talk Money Week campaign, we’re calling for you to ‘do one thing’ to improve your financial wellbeing, share it with others, and inspire them to do the same. Our website has all the ideas, information, and tools you need to start these conversations.”
