President Joe Biden will visit Austin on Monday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Presidential Library. The trip, originally scheduled for July 15, was postponed after an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. White House sources confirmed that Biden will be in Austin for the rescheduled celebration.

The president, who has been isolating at his Rehoboth, Delaware, vacation home as he recovers from COVID-19, announced Sunday that he would not seek reelection. This decision comes amid pressure from Democrats for him to step aside after a disappointing debate performance against former President Trump, raising concerns about his fitness for office. Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.

During his visit to Austin, Biden will deliver a keynote speech at the LBJ Presidential Library, located on the University of Texas at Austin campus. The event will take place inside the auditorium at 2313 Red River St.

Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, the first Democratic congressional lawmaker to call for Biden to step aside, reflected on the president’s announcement. “When I respectfully called for President Biden to step aside almost three weeks ago, I recognized that this would be a painful and difficult decision, not unlike that faced long ago under different circumstances by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Today’s courageous action caps decades of selfless service and opens the door to a convention that can build on our progress and prevent a takeover of our country by Trump and his gang,” Doggett said. The event will feature notable figures such as Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, who portrayed LBJ in the 2016 film “All the Way,” and United Nations ambassador Andrew Young. Though the event is not open to the public, it will be streamed online.
The exact time of the address has yet to be announced. Drivers in the area should expect various traffic delays, particularly on Red River Street, Robert Dedman Drive, Clyde Littlefield Drive, East Dean Keeton Street, Comal Street, and Manor Road. Additionally, roadways near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport may experience some disruptions.
