Buffett sells S&P 500 ETFs, signals caution

by / ⠀News / February 19, 2025

Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” has made a surprising move that could signal a warning to investors. In his latest 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Buffett revealed that he has closed out his positions in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. Buffett had held these funds, which mirror the composition of the S&P 500, since the fourth quarter of 2019.

Despite the strong performance of these ETFs over the past two years, Buffett’s decision to sell them might indicate his anticipation of a possible market correction. In his recent shareholder letter, Buffett commented on the “casino-like behavior” in the market. The S&P 500 is currently trading at one of its most expensive levels since its inception in the late 1950s.

Buffett’s cautious market outlook

Buffett’s investing philosophy is based on value investing, which involves seeking out undervalued companies with growth potential. While he has sold his S&P 500 Index funds, Buffett has expressed his enduring belief in the index’s value as a long-term investment.

In his 2013 letter to shareholders, Buffett advised putting 90% of his cash in an S&P 500 Index fund for his wife’s benefit, illustrating his faith in the long-term strength of American companies. For individual investors, Buffett’s decision highlights the importance of considering valuations and maintaining quality investments over the long haul. Even if the S&P 500 experiences a short-term decline, it is likely to deliver substantial long-term gains, as it has historically.

While Buffett’s recent moves may hint at his caution regarding current market valuations, they reinforce the importance of a disciplined, long-term investment strategy. Investors should carefully assess their portfolios and be prepared for potential market volatility.
