Fashion as a Catalyst for Change: Mercado Global’s Annual Gala Highlights Women’s Empowerment

by / ⠀Featured / March 5, 2025

On March 6, 2025, leaders from fashion, finance, and philanthropy will gather at Tribeca 360° in New York City for Mercado Global’s Fashion Forward Gala, an annual event that highlights the power of fashion as a force for social and economic transformation. The event, which is being held in honor of International Women’s Day, will focus on how ethical fashion improves the lives of Native American women craftspeople throughout the Americas by transforming traditional workmanship into long-term economic opportunities.

The Brooklyn-based nonprofit and accessories brand, Mercado Global has been bridging the gap between Indigenous artisans and the international fashion industry for almost 20 years, working at the nexus of ethical fashion and economic mobility. By collaborating with companies like Stuart Weitzman, Free People, and Levi’s®, the group has given thousands of women financial independence while also transforming their communities.

“This year’s honorees exemplify the transformative impact of investing in women,” says Ruth Álvarez-Degolia, Founder and Executive Director of Mercado Global. “Empowering women is at the heart of everything we do, and we look forward to celebrating their contributions and amplifying our mission with our supporters.”

Leaders who have made significant contributions to the advancement of sustainable and ethical fashion will be honored at this year’s event. One of them, Julia Kisla Taylor, CEO of The Lions Management, has been a steadfast board member and advocate for Mercado Global’s efforts. The Lions’ branding and strategic support has helped increase awareness for Mercado Global’s mission.

Among the other recipients are philanthropist and businesswoman Mona Patel, Blue Owl Capital’s Madeleine Sinclair, and Fernando García, co-creative director of Oscar de la Renta. They represent the convergence of the fashion, financial, and social impact sectors, all of which have the potential to bring about significant, long-lasting change when they work together.

Fabiola Beracasa Beckman will chair the event, which will also include a seated dinner, a VIP cocktail reception, and a program highlighting the work of Mercado Global and the artisans it supports. The gala provides a platform for action as well as a celebration of the organization’s impact.

As the fashion industry faces increasing scrutiny over its sustainability practices, labor conditions, and ethical sourcing, Mercado Global and its partners understand true sustainability isn’t just about materials—it’s about people.

For those looking to engage with this movement firsthand, the Fashion Forward Gala offers an evening of dialogue, advocacy, and impact—where style meets substance, and empowerment takes center stage.
