A self-taught artist turned professional, Ting-en’s unique journey from Taiwan to New York City has shaped their artistic voice and inspired others with resilience and curiosity.
Cultural Roots and Inspirations
Ting-en Tsai is an artist and illustrator from Taipei, Taiwan, currently based in New York City. Growing up in the capital of Taiwan, a nation at the crossroads of varied cultures and clashing ideologies, Ting-en developed an interest in connecting with others across values, which shaped their artistic foundation.
“I don’t remember when I started drawing. Maybe around the age when my hands were grown enough to hold pens? And for the longest time, I communicated the most fluently when it was through art,” Ting-en adds.
Fast-forward to today. Their down-to-earth and approachable illustration practice embodies a fresh perspective on social commentary, humor, and cultural symbols found in everyday life.
Signature Style and Artistic Practice
Known for their storytelling-rich illustrations, Ting-en builts narratives with intriguing characters in ambiguous worlds. They strive to create an experience that invites viewers to look back again, hoping to taste more of the hidden within.
Their improvisational process is one of their signatures. “I love to draw spontaneously. I have found the unprompted and unconstrained impulses flowing from my consciousness through pens onto papers, sometimes digital tablets, very enjoyable. I believe this has sharpened my quick problem-solving skills in creative work,” Ting-en says.
However, to them, executing topics after a deep dive into research also makes the results more meaningful. One example is a recent piece they created for a group exhibition focusing on political propaganda. Ting-en dived into this challenging project passionately, as their upbringing breathing the politically and culturally complex air in Taiwan has well-versed them in visual languages’ capacity to shape perspectives. Specializing in capturing nuanced experiences and narratives, Ting-en has found researching across diverse genres of media and artistic approaches what fuels their creativity.
Notable Achievements
Since moving to New York City and attending Parsons School of Design, Ting-en has professionally worked as an illustrator and designer with reputable organizations and established clients. Those include the Society of Illustrators, Scentbird, Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute, CommonWealth Media and Publishing, and Creature World. Their work has been exhibited at private creative spaces in New York City, including Mriya Gallery and Art on the Ave at the World Trade Center Oculus. Recently, a few projects have been in the works, including a graphic novel signed with The Rights Factory.
Vision for the Future
Driven by a passion for visual storytelling, Ting-en Tsai aspires to publish graphic novels and illustration books, collaborate with industries like fashion and animation, and become a globally recognized storyteller.
