The Government of India has not increased the retirement age of central government employees to 62. A post claiming that the Union Cabinet approved raising the retirement age to 62 is going viral on social media. However, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has clarified that this claim is false.
The government confirmed in the Lok Sabha in August 2023 that there is no proposal under consideration to change the retirement age. Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated this in reply to a question on August 9, 2023. The PIB also reviewed press releases regarding Union Cabinet meetings but found no information related to discussions on the retirement age.
The most recent Cabinet meeting on November 6, 2024, focused on the “PM Vidyalakshmi” scheme for supporting meritorious students.
Government denies retirement age increase
No mention was made of retirement age changes.
The 7th Central Pay Commission did not recommend increasing the retirement age to 62. While certain employees, such as medical and scientific specialists, may receive extensions up to 62 or 65 on a case-by-case basis, the general retirement age remains 60. When posts claiming the government had raised the retirement age went viral, the PIB’s official fact-check handle clarified on November 19, 2024, that this news is false.
They urged the public not to share unverified information. In summary, the Indian government has not increased the retirement age of central government employees to 62. The age of retirement remains unchanged, and the viral notice suggesting otherwise is fake.
