Social Security is an important part of retirement planning for many Americans. If you’re thinking about retiring soon, you’ll need to know how to apply for Social Security retirement benefits. You can start collecting Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62.
But you’ll get less money per check than if you wait until your full retirement age or age 70 to apply. Before you apply, make sure you have all the documents you need. This includes your Social Security number, place of birth, work history for the last 5 years, spouse information, bank account details, and names of any dependents.
Your children may be eligible for benefits too if they are 17 or younger, 18 or 19 and still in school, or became disabled before age 22. To apply for benefits, go to the Social Security Administration’s website. Create an account if you don’t have one already.
Then go to the Apply for Social Security benefits page.
Applying for retirement benefits made easy
Select who you’re applying for and what type of benefit.
Click “Learn how to apply” and then “Apply online” to start your application. You can also call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 to set up an appointment to apply. You may be able to do it over the phone or you might need to go to a local office.
After you apply, you’ll get a letter with a decision. If you apply to get benefits as soon as possible, you’ll usually hear back within 30 days. If you apply in advance, you’ll get the letter closer to when you want your benefits to start.
You’ll need to choose what month you want your benefits to begin. If approved, you’ll typically get your first payment the next month. Applying for Social Security retirement benefits can be tricky.
But being prepared with the right documents and knowing the steps can make it easier.
