The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced that the Direct File free tax filing system will be available for the 2025 tax filing season across all 50 American states and Washington D.C.

This innovative tool has been designed to simplify tax filing, potentially saving millions of American citizens time and money.

After a successful pilot test and comprehensive evaluation, this user-friendly system was adopted by 18 states by the end of 2025, bringing cumulative savings of approximately $15.5 million. Further expansion plans are underway for nationwide implementation, which could generate significant savings to State and Federal budgets.

The Direct File system, available in English and Spanish, will provide an efficient and cost-effective method for tax filing while reducing the risk of errors and paper usage. The system was highly regarded in a study in which 90% of participants rated their interaction as “excellent” or “above average.”

The implementation of this system has led to significant impacts on organizational efficiency and the timely processing of tax returns, indicating not only its cost-effectiveness but also qualitative superiority. The IRS urges taxpayers to take advantage of early filing through this system to allow ample processing time.

The Direct File system has been used by over 140,000 taxpayers, generating more than $90 million in tax refunds and cost savings of around $5.6 million for federal return tax preparation.

Exploring the IRS’s Direct File system

An average refund amount of approximately $643 per user has set a new peak compared to the previous years.

Despite the Direct File system’s proven success and benefits, the IRS does not plan to discontinue the Free File program. This program remains an important tool for providing free tax return services to eligible low—and moderate-income taxpayers. The organization is committed to enhancing the Free File system’s features to make it more user-friendly and accessible.
