Residents of Oko-Filling, a neighborhood in Araromi, Ijoko, Sango Ota, rescued a man who was gagged and left for dead by his wife and children over a dispute about his retirement benefits. The incident happened early on Thursday, March 13, at the family’s home. The trouble started when the man refused to give his entire retirement money to his wife and four sons.
After getting his payout, he opened two shops for his wife at Abule and gave her N3 million. He also bought a N12 million vehicle since the family already had a house in the community. But his wife and sons, all graduates, were not happy with how the money was divided and wanted to get more from him.
Things got worse when the man sold the vehicle soon after buying it, which made the neighbors suspicious. A landlord in the area said the man was later found inside his home with his mouth, hands, and feet tied up. “He was tied like an animal to be killed.
They (his wife and kids) got about six local men to tie him up. The strange noise from their packing made residents gather in front of the house to find out what was happening,” the landlord said. According to witnesses, the man’s wife and sons were seen putting things into a small bus outside the house.
When residents asked about the man and did not get good answers, they went inside the house and found him completely tied up.
Family dispute over retirement funds
“The man was untied and taken to the hospital.
He’s still there getting treatment. The suspects were all taken to the police station. One of the men admitted that the man’s wife hired them to tie him up.
They were all taken to the police station that morning,” the landlord added. An audio message from Emmanuel Omola, the Anjomo Community Development Association (CDA) chairman, also confirmed what the landlord said. Omola said the woman first went to the police to report that her husband wanted to kill her, but when told to come back with a vehicle to take the police to her house, she did not return.
“By the time she got to the neighborhood, she went inside with some men to tie the man, and when they started packing things, the neighbors heard noise and gathered there,” Omola said. Omola advised people always to ask questions when they hear unusual noises around them. “We shouldn’t ignore it; let’s respond quickly.
If the landlords hadn’t responded fast, the man would have probably been killed,” Omola stated. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Omolola Odutola, said she had not been told about the incident at the time of this report. The man is currently in the hospital with injuries, while his wife, children, and the men involved are in police custody.
