March Social Security payments: Dates explained

by / ⠀News / March 10, 2025

Social Security recipients in the United States are set to receive their payments for March 2025 according to the schedule set by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The majority of the 73 million beneficiaries will receive their payments on one of three Wednesdays this month, depending on their date of birth. On Wednesday, March 12, those born between the 1st and 10th of the month will receive their payments.

The next round of payments will be made on Wednesday, March 19, for those born between the 11th and 20th. Finally, on Wednesday, March 26, beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st will receive their payments. However, this schedule does not apply to everyone.

Recipients who began receiving their Social Security checks before May 1997 will get their money on the third of every month, unless that date falls on a weekend or holiday.

Additionally, those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will always get their check on the first of the month, except for weekends or holidays.

According to the SSA, retired workers, who make up just over 70% of Social Security recipients, receive an average monthly payment of $1,978. Disabled workers get an average of $1,580 per month, while recipients of survivors’ benefits are paid an average of $1,546 per month. In the SSI program, the average monthly payment stands at $714.

Some Social Security beneficiaries might receive a benefit increase soon, which could see them receiving $2,000 per month. Anyone aged 62 or older who has worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least ten years is eligible to receive these benefits. The SSA explains, “If you’ve worked and paid Social Security taxes for 10 years or more, you’ll get a monthly benefit based on that work.” Individuals may also qualify for additional funds based on the work history of a current or former spouse.
