The State of Michigan Retirement System has invested public pension money in Bitcoin and Ethereum. The fund put $6.6 million into the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF and $1.4 million into the Grayscale Ethereum ETF. This move makes Michigan the second state to invest retirement funds into cryptocurrencies, following Wisconsin’s earlier decision.
The Michigan Retirement System first started investing in crypto in July 2024. Since then, the fund has earned back its original investments plus an additional $39 million. Ron Leix, the spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Treasury, said that their crypto investment is still a small part of the $107.5 billion pension portfolio.
He emphasized that cryptocurrency does not play a central role in their overall investment strategy. Michigan’s decision to invest in crypto reflects a growing trend among institutional investors. More of them are considering crypto assets since the SEC approved Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

However, the crypto market remains volatile. In August 2024, Bitcoin’s price declined by 12%.
The move by public pension funds to invest in cryptocurrencies could have significant effects on retirees and local communities. Successful investments might strengthen pension funds and provide more financial security for retirees. But the unpredictable nature of crypto markets also introduces risks that could put retiree benefits in danger if the investments do poorly.
There is also a debate about the ethics of tying retiree finances to assets that are known for being volatile. Some question whether it is wise to invest limited public resources in an asset class with steep price swings. They ask if the potential high rewards are worth the inherent risks that come with cryptocurrencies.
As more states consider following Michigan’s lead, there will likely be discussions about regulations and government oversight to reduce the potential risks involved in such investments. The future balance between opportunity and caution will be important as public pension funds navigate this evolving market.
