Snow Shortage Hits Dunbar’s Winter Tourism Businesses Hard

Dunbar Snow Shortage

Winter has been unusually stingy with snow in Dunbar, Wisconsin, causing a ripple effect on local businesses reliant on snow-based activities, like snowmobile trails and ski operations. The bleak snow conditions have deterred tourists, impacting revenues of not just ski resorts but also restaurants and lodging in the area.

Local authorities have attempted snow-making but it’s not a widespread solution owing to cost and feasibility challenges. The predicament has sparked community chatter on possible diversification of local attractions. Ideas floated include promoting year-round attractions within Dunbar like hiking trails, mountain biking, bird watching, and local historical sites to mitigate future weather-related downturns.

Specifically, the Pine Mountain Ski Resort has had to scale down operations in response to the snow shortage, affecting associated businesses such as equipment rentals and ski instruction. The downturn in business has forced many restaurants and cafés that are typically buzzing during winter to stay largely dormant.

The frosty situation also deeply affected Ken Hein’s snowmobile trail business which typically garners a quarter of its annual earnings from winter tourists. Hein has had to restrict his tavern’s operating days and cancel numerous events due to the lack of snow.

Another victim is UP Cycle & Sport, a local enterprise run by Mike Rock, that reported a steep fall in snowmobile sales. In a typical year, these sales would constitute close to 40% of the company’s yearly profits. The Rock family has, however, promised no layoffs due to the dip in sales.

Both Wisconsin and Michigan governors have urged businesses impacted by the snow deficit to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help them stay operational.

Despite the grim circumstances, the afflicted businesses remain resilient and optimistic. They continue to pivot, adapt and innovate their services to cater to a wider demographic, drawing valuable lessons from the adversity. The local businesses continue to keep the spirit of tenacity and adaptability alive as they navigate through this challenging market situation.
