Social Security to issue August 21 payments

August Payments

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will distribute payments to retirees this Wednesday, August 21, as part of its regular monthly payment schedule. The amount each beneficiary receives varies based on factors such as their age at retirement and their contributions to the program during their working years. Retirees are divided into two main groups for payment distribution purposes.

Those who retired before May 1997 receive payments on the third day of each month. For those who began receiving payments after that date, the SSA uses a staggered distribution system based on the retiree’s date of birth. Under this system, retirees born between the 1st and 10th of any month received their payments earlier in August.

Those born between the 11th and 20th will receive payments on August 21, while those born between the 21st and 31st will receive payments on August 28.

These payment dates correspond to the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

If a payment date falls on a weekend or a national holiday when banks are closed, payments are rescheduled to the previous business day to ensure timely receipt. The amount each retiree receives can vary significantly. In 2024, retirees who started receiving benefits at age 62 can receive up to $2,572 per month.

Those who retired at age 67 can receive up to $3,822 per month, while retirees who waited until age 70 can receive a maximum of $4,873 per month, the highest benefit distributed. Beneficiaries who receive their payments by mail may experience delays due to weather conditions or other emergencies, as they depend on the U.S. Postal Service for delivery. Those receiving direct deposits should know their bank’s processing times and policies and contact them directly if delays are frequent.
