President Trump’s new tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico have sparked fears of a global trade war. The U.S. stock markets plunged in response, with the Dow falling by 1.55% and the S&P 500 losing 1.2%. The tariffs, which include a 25% levy on most Chinese goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy exports, are expected to result in higher consumer prices on a wide range of products.
Major companies like Ford and General Motors also saw significant share declines. Canada, Mexico, and China, the United States’ three most important trading partners, expressed outrage at the new tariffs and vowed to retaliate. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada described the tariffs as “very dumb” and committed to implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico announced that her country would unveil its own countermeasures shortly.

China responded by imposing 15% tariffs on imports of chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton from the U.S. and 10% tariffs on other agricultural products.
Analysts worldwide, including U.S. Federal Reserve officials, warned about the potential for higher prices, supply-chain interruptions, and slower economic growth. Some Republicans in Congress expressed hope that the tariffs would only be temporary. President Trump, however, showed no signs of backing down.
He responded to Trudeau’s televised address with a social media post threatening reciprocal tariffs if Canada retaliated. The global markets continue to reel from the uncertainty, with investors bracing for more fluctuations as the situation unfolds. The international community watches closely as tensions escalate, fearing the far-reaching consequences of a trade war.
