With Rich Heritage And Bold Flavors, Psagot Winery Shines

by / ⠀Experts / April 2, 2025

In the rocky soil of Binyamin, not far from Jerusalem, sits a little winery with a lot of heart.  Psagot Winery was founded in 2003 by Yaakov and Na’ama Berg, a husband-and-wife team whose love for wine, vineyards, and Israel is evident in the quality and craft of their fine wines.  At Psagot, passion is more than just a word–it’s something one embodies in everything one does.

“We want the world to share our passion for Psagot wine, Israel, and for those you love,” says Yaakov Berg, co-founder of Psagot.  “From our hearts and vineyard to your home.”

Psagot

The hills of Binyamin where Psagot Winery resides contain some of the most optimal conditions for winemaking.  With the perfect climate for viticulture, rich soil, and sustainable practices that keep the land fertile for generations to come, the vineyards that grow each grape reflect the incredible territory of the region and produce bountiful harvests of rich, high-quality wine.  Psagot Winery’s most recent harvest yielded around one million bottles, which they export to dozens of countries worldwide.

To know the story of Psagot Winery, one has to look much further back than 2003.  The northern region of the Jerusalem mountains contains many layers of history stacked one on top of the other, with remnants of historic vineyards and wineries peppered throughout the land.  When Psagot Winery was first being constructed, an ancient cave from the Hasmonean Dynasty period was unearthed.  Inside the cave was a single coin dating back to the Great Revolt of 73-66 BC.

“For Freedom of Zion,” read the coin, with a design of a vine leaf beside the ancient words.  This coin would signal the birth of Psagot Winery and the symbol of the Bergs’ passion for Israel. Every label is adorned with an image of that ancient coin, signifying humanity’s connection to the earth, its history, and its ancestors.

While the story and the symbolism of Psagot Winery are profound, the true highlight of this winery is the fine quality of its delectable wine.  Psagot Winery proudly exports several varieties of wines including the rich Psagot Cabernet Sauvignon, the light and crisp Psagot Sauvignon, Blanc, and the award-winning Psagot Peak.  Every bottle of Psagot wine carries the richness of the fruit borne in the high-altitude vineyards, with a taste that transports the drinker to new heights of flavor and emotion.

Psagot Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect vehicle to capture the intensity of the Jerusalem vineyards.  Structured, yet elegant, the wine has a dark, ruby-red hue accompanied by strong scents of dark forest fruits and a hint of oak.  Psagot Edom is an even darker wine, a Bordeaux-style red blend with a notable mineral backbone and bold, black fruit aroma.  The wine is named after the Edom mountains overlooked by the high-altitude vineyards where the berries thrive.

One of Psagot’s most acclaimed wines is their Psagot Peak, which recently won the 97-point Double Gold Medal at the 2025 WSWA Tasting Competition.  This Mediterranean-style red blend is a distinct blend of Southern French varietals that have adapted to Israel’s climate.  The Psagot Peak has interweaving layers of black fruit, pepper, dark chocolate, and dried flowers all wrapped up in a smooth texture paired with fresh, structured acidity.

While Psagot’s red wines all carry a distinct richness and burst of flavor, the winery also carries several notable whites that offer a crisp and refreshing contrast, balancing bright acidity with delicate fruit and floral notes.  Chief among them is the Psagot Sauvignon Blanc, a light and citrusy wine with a melon sweetness and a refreshing minerality.  With high-quality grapes sourced from vineyards deep within the Jerusalem Mountains, the Psagot Sauvignon Blanc is a prime example of how Psagot’s love for Israel is fully embodied in its wine.

“Whether you choose Psagot Cabernet Sauvignon, Psagot Edom, or Psagot Peak for a romantic dinner at home or as a heartfelt gift, you can’t go wrong this season of rebirth with the gift of Psagot,” says Sam Soroka, Psagot’s head winemaker.

Soroka brings over 20 years of experience in Israeli wine production to Psagot Winery, serving as one of the chief artisans driving Yaakov and Na’ama Berg’s agenda.  Under Soroka’s direction, each grape is meticulously selected, every wine carefully aged in one of Psagot’s cellars.  To the three of them, a bottle of wine is much more than just a bottle of wine–it’s a story, a passion, a respect for the land and for the countless people who have lived on it before this generation.

Psagot wines are available for purchase in fine liquor stores throughout the US, giving wine lovers across the country the opportunity to experience the incredible craftsmanship and rich history of Psagot Winery.  With a story that began in a cave over 2000 years ago, Psagot Winery truly is making history with every bottle.
